When Jess awoke the following morning, her fleeting belief that all was well in the world was quickly usurped by a flood of memories of the events of last night. How could she have been so stupid? Why hadn’t she realised that Cameron was leading her on? But she hadn’t been stupid; she’d received very real signals from him. How could she have failed to identify him as a player?

Jess couldn’t avoid Cameron because it was Monday morning and she had to be installed in the office by nine. And she couldn’t avoid the household because she felt, whilst wretched, ravenously hungry and had no food in her room – she’d have to go down to breakfast. Jess rose and showered, hoping that the cleansing water would enable her to have a more positive perspective on things. Feeling little different afterwards, she dressed and then, descending the grand staircase like an automaton, made for the dining room.

Miraculously, it was transformed back to its old self and set up for breakfast. Jess wondered who had brought about the change and when; maybe the youngsters before they’d been dismissed and driven back to the village in the minibus. They would have school this morning. Remaining guests were partaking of a Continental breakfast before setting off home too; Veronica had informed Jess that airport taxis were scheduled to collect them later in the morning.

The dining room certainly had an air of ‘after the ball’ about it. To Jess’s eyes, everyone looked jaded and slightly tired of company. Despite her subdued mood, Jess filled her plate with Pablo’s scrumptious croissants – there was nothing to watch her figure for now. She poured herself a large mug of strong coffee and took her breakfast out to the conservatory, hoping it would be empty. She was right – the large glass-paned room was distinctly chilly. But Jess had on a warm cardigan (the office would be cold too) so she found an inviting wicker chair in a corner of the room, slipped off her heels, sat down, tucked up her feet at her side and bit into a croissant.

What was to be done? Nothing could be done. Jess was Cameron’s PA; she had only two choices: accept his new status and carry on in her role or hand in her resignation. But if she chose to do the latter, she couldn’t conduct herself with anything less than decorum. She couldn’t complain that he had betrayed her, only say that she’d decided the job wasn’t right for her, that was all. What should she do?

Jess was still pondering this question as she entered the converted stables that served as the Estate offices. Walking across the courtyard, her anxiety levels had been building with the anticipation of finding Cameron seated at his desk. However, her concerns had been misplaced: he was not there and he didn’t appear all morning. On reflection, Jess realised she’d been foolish to expect otherwise – no doubt he was embroiled in his fiancée.
